The small medieval city of Girona lies within the region of Catalunya and has a yearly calendar filled with events and festivals. Known as ‘the City of Festivals’, one of its best is the Temps de Flors flower festival, where floral installations decorate the city streets and historic landmarks. This year the festival will run from May 13 – 21 2017. Here are some of our images from last year to inspire you to visit.
The installations change each year and every time get more elaborate than the last. The city’s historic churches, cathedrals and monasteries also act as a canvas, ready to be painted with colourful flowers.
Some installations at the Temps de Flors are simple and striking, while others are intricate and complex, both however are very photogenic, so don’t forget to bring your camera.
The floral displays are spread throughout the whole city and a map is provided showing you where each is located. Most are located in the old part of the city and the Jewish Quarter, although some can also be found along the River Onyar.
Now in its 62nd year, the Temps de Flors attracts visitors from all over Spain, not just Catalunya. Each year local floral artists and botanists have to come up with new creative ideas to showcase to the crowds.
The festival also allows visitors to see inside many of the city’s public buildings such as museums, palaces, libraries and its town hall or Ayuntamiento. You can also see a display inside the city’s old Arab Baths.
