We are big fans of quirky accommodation – on our trips around the world, we’ve slept in everything from traditional Mongolian yurts to tree houses and boats. Here’s one of the quirkiest accommodation options that we found – an elephant lodge in Sri Lanka, where you can actually sleep inside the belly of an elephant. Yes, we kid you not. KumbukRiver Eco-Lodge is a unique hotel located in a 16-acre natural enclave in Sri Lanka and is shaped like an elephant lodge.
The elephant lodge in Sri Lanka consists of three individually designed eco villas – the Elephant Villa, Tree Luxuria and Kumbuk Chalet. The 40ft two-story elephant lodge, more than twice the size of a real elephant, is made entirely of wood and thatch and consists of a bedroom and lounge area, as well as a bathroom with running hot water.
The Tree Luxuria is a luxury tree house set in the canopy with floor to ceiling glass walls overlooking the river. This is no ordinary tree house though – it also contains a fridge, an air-conditioned cabin, a bathroom and a tea and coffee maker.
Kumbuk Chalet, inspired by a typical farmer’s house, is made in the traditional Sri Lankan way from mud and thatch. Although humble, the chalet is far from rudimentary. It contains an outside tree shower and solar lamps and is decorated with old wagon wheels and soft furnishings.
The unique eco experience doesn’t stop there though; the lodge also has a river walk, zip wires, a sky chair and bathing points. You’re likely to see real elephants here too, being situated in Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife destination.
